Tooth extrusion

Making optimal use of your own tooth root

More about tooth extrusion

What is tooth extrusion?

Tooth extrusion involves gently pulling the tooth root slightly out of the jawbone. This can be done using braces or specialized instruments.

When do I need this treatment?

  • Sometimes a tooth is too damaged or broken to function properly. This treatment makes it possible to gain sufficient support for placing a crown.

  • If the bone around a tooth is not at the same level as that of the neighbouring teeth, the tooth can be moved to reach the same height. This is useful if you want to correct the bone structure before, for example, before placing an implant.

What can I expect from this treatment?

  • Extrusion with braces:   Using brackets and rubber bands, the tooth can be moved. This process takes a few weeks, and we will see you several times during this period to closely monitor the progress. It may be necessary to slightly loosen the gums in between, but this will be done with local anesthesia.

  • Extrusion with an instrument:   In this treatment, the tooth is moved directly by gently pulling it. This will also be done under local anesthesia. Once positioned correctly, the tooth will be stabilized to allow it to grow into its new position.

1. Gathering information

We will first need to determine which type of extrusion is most suitable and what you are comfortable with. You will also receive a cost estimate.

2. Extrusion

The braces will be placed, or the tooth will be moved directly.

3. Check-up

We will check if the tooth is in the correct position to proceed.

4. Crown or implant placement

Depending on the reason for the treatment, a crown or implant will be placed. For more information about crowns or implants, please refer to the relevant pages.

Background information and costs

In dental care, we work with fixed rates established annually by the Dutch Healthcare Authority. This includes a list of codes and descriptions that correspond to different components of a treatment.

The total cost of a treatment is the sum of these components, each with a fixed maximum rate.

You can find the full list of all codes at: https://www.mondzorgkosten.nl/tandartscodes
