More about braces
What is it?
Braces are a device used to move your teeth into a better position. A straight bite is easier to keep clean, reducing the risk of cavities, gum problems, and wear.
There are different types of braces. We use clear braces, known as aligners, and the familiar bracket braces, also referred to as fixed braces.
When do I need this treatment?
When you are concerned about one or more teeth being misaligned.
When you have previously undergone orthodontic treatment, but your teeth have shifted again.
In preparation for a more comprehensive treatment plan, such as crowns and/or implants.
To minimize dental issues, such as wear and tear.
What can I expect from the treatment?
An orthodontic treatment consists of 5 components.
1. Examination and development of the treatment plan:
During first appointment, we assess your needs and preferences and gather all relevant information. We help you to decide between a fixed or clear aligner. Then we take X-rays from various angles, a 3D scan of your mouth, and some standard photographs.
The dentist will analyze this information in detail and create a 3D model of the final result. We then contact you to schedule a follow-up appointment.
2. Discussion of the treatment plan and costs:
We will discuss the options available for you, along with any potential risks associated with the orthodontic treatment. We will also talk about the expected duration of the orthodontic process.
If you agree to the proposed plan and the costs, we can proceed with ordering the braces.
3. Placement of the braces:
The placement of the bracket braces takes place during a single appointment lasting 90 minutes. Placing a clear aligner takes 60 minutes.
The procedure is not painful, however you may experience some sensitivity for a few days afterwards. Additionally, you might find it challenging to eat hard or chewy foods at first.
4. Braces check-ups:
You will have regular check-ups with our dentist and the orthodontic assistant. These appointments last beween 15 to 30 minutes. The frequency of these visits will depend on the type of braces you have. We carefully monitor your teeth to ensure that the appropriate amount of pressure is applied to it - just the right amount, neither too much nor too little.
5. Removal of the braces and retention of the result:
Once we have reached the final result, we will remove the braces. At that point, we will place a retainer, which is a removable, clear night guard. In some cases, a fixed retainer may also be placed, which is a retainer wire bonded behind your front teeth.
The average duration of orthodontic treatment ranges between 1.5 to 2 years, although simpler corrections can often be completed more quickly.
What are the costs?
Below is a general overview of the costs involved. This includes various components that depend on your specific situation, such as the complexity of the treatment, the materials required, and the duration of the orthodontic treatment.
Examination, creation and assessment of 3D X-rays, and development of a treatment plan | €350 |
Discussion of the treatment plan | €70 |
Placement of fixed brace | €1500 |
Placement of clear aligners | €2000 |
Brace check-ups | Approximately €50 per appointment |

Health insurance only covers orthodontic treatment if you have a specific supplementary insurance policy. Children are covered under their parents' supplementary insurance. Currently some insurance companies impose a waiting period of one year. For more information about coverage and/or waiting times, we recommend contacting your own health insurer.
Background information and costs
In dental care, we work with fixed rates established annually by the Dutch Healthcare Authority. This includes a list of codes and descriptions that correspond to different components of a treatment.
The total cost of a treatment is the sum of these components, each with a fixed maximum rate.
You can find the complete list of all codes at: https://www.allesoverhetgebit.nl/alles-over-kosten-en-vergoedingen/tarieven-2024/code-f-orthodontie-2024
Did you know?
There is a significant difference between fixed and clear braces. We have outlined the key advantages and disadvantages of each treatment in a table.
Clear braces (aligners) | Fixed braces (brackets) | |
Invisibility | Less visible Aligners are transparent and less noticeable. | More visible Brackets are visible and can affect the appearance. |
Removability | Removable Aligners can be removed while eating and brushing your teeth. This makes oral care easier and helps maintain eating habits. | Not removable Fixed brackets are permanently attached to the teeth and do not require discipline to wear, but they often do require elastics. Elastics must be worn for 22 hours a day for effective treatment. |
Comfort | Comfortabe Aligners have no sharp wires or brackets that can cause discomfort. They are generally more comfortable to wear and cause less irritation in the mouth. | Less comfortable Brackets and wires can initially cause discomfort and irritation in the mouth until you become accustomed to them. This irritation typically decreases over time. |
Complexity of treatments | Mild to moderate Aligners are effective for mild to moderate orthodontic issues. | Mild to complex Fixed braces can address a wider range of orthodontic issues, including complex cases. |
Discipline and responsibility | A lot of discipline The success of an aligner treatment depends on the discipline and cooperation of the patient. Aligners must be worn for 22 hours a day to be effective. Forgetting or being careless with wearing them can affect the results. | A bit less discipline Fixed braces require less discipline and responsibility, as they cannot be removed. However, wearing elastics may still be necessary for effective treatment. |
Oral hygiene | Simple Cleaning teeth with aligners is easier because they can be removed. This helps maintain good oral hygiene. | Extra care Cleaning teeth with fixed brackets requires extra effort, as food particles can easily get stuck around the brackets and wires. This can increase the risk of tooth decay and gum issues if oral hygiene is not adequately maintained. |
